Atlanta Braves edge past Chicago Cubs 10-3 – MLB News
The Atlanta Braves put in a tremendous performance as they beat the Chicago Cub 10-3 on Tuesday, July 3. Chipper Jones had his career’s third five-hit game to guide the team to a majestic victory.
Chris Volstad, who was supposed to lend strength to the Cubs failed to live up to the expectations of the team. He proved to be utterly costly in his 4.1 innings, allowing no less than six runs and giving up seven hits with 7.94 ERA.
While the Braves offence was in full swing, it was Jones – the All-Star who turned the table on the Cubs. He started from the first inning to give the team a 1-0 lead, which the Cubs tried to end with their quality hitting in the third, scoring three invaluable runs.
Braves seemed in complete form, going for some big hits to not only put an end to the lead of  Chicago Cubs, but also gain ultimate lead. Chipper Jones hit a three-run double in the sixth, having had 10-game hitting streak with a record .313 average.
"Tonight was just one of those dream games," Jones said. "I would be hard-pressed to find a game in which I played better."
The team manager did not seem particularly pleased with the performance of Chris Volstad whom he thought could have done better. For Sveum, the inability of the starter to follow the catcher resulted in what transpired at the end.
"He didn't really pitch to the game plan and that was discouraging," Sveum said, also commenting of the fact that Volstad failed to follow the catcher Steve Clevenger.
However, despite the lacklustre performance of the player, the team manager said the team has no other option but to give Volstad another chance.
"We don't have any options, so we'll run him out there again," Sveum said. "As of now we don't have any other options."
The four-game series now stands level as both the teams have won one game each. It will be exciting to see whether or not the Cubs have the ability to make a comeback in Wednesday’s third game of the series.
