Atlanta Braves go down 5-6 against Florida Marlins – MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves lost 5-6 against Florida Marlins on Monday, September 19 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida to see their lead in the Wild Card standings crash down to 2.5 games.
A four-run seventh inning gave the Braves sufficient opportunity to prevail in the game, but Craig Kimbrel failed to save the game, leaking two runs in the last inning to lose his third game of the season.
Earlier, Mike Minor made an ordinary start for the Braves, leaking four runs from six hits in 5.2 innings. He struck-out six batters in this stretch but was unglued for three home-runs, which came in handy for the Marlins.
Braves had earlier showed their reservations on trusting Minor for the postseason and this performance articulated their concern. The offense, however, helped prevent a potential loss for the starter, scoring four-runs in the seventh inning to gain a one-run
lead over the home side.
Mike Stanton gave the Marlins an early two-run lead, smashing a home-run in the first and third inning respectively before Jason Heyward reduced the lead to one in the sixth inning with a home-run towards right-field.
The Marlins increased their lead to three-runs in the sixth inning after Logan Morrison unleashed a two-run home-run, but Dan Uggla initiated a momentum that gave the Braves a one-run lead by the end of the seventh.
Uggla homered towards right-field before Alex Gonzalez, Michael Bourn and Antoan Richardson scored a run each to shatter Florida’s bull-pen.
Eric O’Flaherty and Jonny Venters then pitched a perfect inning each to establish their authority on the game but Kimbrel failed to replicate his outstanding form in this game and lost it for the Braves after Omar Infante smashed a two-run homer under immense
pressure in the ninth inning.
After the home-run, Infante said, "I'm very happy. It's my first walk-off home run. I was feeling a little bad because I made an error two innings before."
Braves are now just 2.5 games clear of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card standings and have eight games to defend their lead. The Cardinals, on the contrary, have ten games to play and are in the form of their life.
