Atlanta Braves go past Philadelphia Phillies 8-7 as Chipper Jones strikes a three-run homer-MLB
Third baseman Chipper Jones steals the show in the last inning as he helps the Atlanta Braves pull off a stunning 8-7 win against the Philadelphia Phillies at Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia in the last game of the three match series on September 2, 2012.
The Braves seemed to be in hibernation all through the innings before they woke up late in the game.
On the other hand, the Phillies surged to a substantial lead in the first inning with five runs. With the way Philadelphia began it was not wrong to believe that they will keep posting runs in the rest of the innings and easily win.
Before the ninth the Phillies were ahead of Atlanta by four runs and therefore expecting the latter to score five runs and win the match appeared more as wishful thinking of the fans than anything realistic.
However, as the bottom of the ninth started the Braves turned prolific. Producing a run-spree, they levelled the score in miraculous fashion and ended up winning the game.
Jones turned out to be the hero in the last inning. By slamming a three-run homer, he took the Braves past Philadelphia by one run.
Despite the fact Atlanta embraced the triumph, their starter Paul Maholm was unimpressive on the mound. The number of runs he gave up shows that he was just fortunate to avoid the loss. In two innings, he yielded six hits and leaked seven runs.
Meanwhile, Braves’ manager Fredi Gonzalez is cheerful after watching the players lifting the team from shambles and taking them to victory.
"This is something I think we need right here," Fredi Gonzalez said. "This is something to get the team going again and get the juices flowing again.”
Hitting the three run homer off the pitches of the relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon tells something about the calibre that Jones boasts. Papelbon is one of the most successful closers in the season as is manifested by the number of saves he has recorded
so far.
"In that mob scene at the plate, you kind of get lost in it, time kind of stands still," Jones said. "You're not really thinking about any of that other stuff. You're just thrilled that you won a game.”
While the Braves will like the status quo to continue, the Phillies will be trying to find a way out to begin winning games as the next series starts.
