Atlanta Braves humiliate Miami Marlins 7-1 as Tommy Hanson strikes out seven - MLB Update
The starter Tommy Hanson strikes-out seven as the Atlanta Braves rout the Miami Marlins 7-1 at Marlins Park, Miami on July 25, 2012 in the last game of the three match series.
While Braves enjoyed the run-spree, Hanson kept Marlins from breaking free from the other end. Five innings he threw did not allow many opportunities to Miami to threaten the Braves’ lead.
He rightly exploited weaknesses of their offence and restricted them to just three hits on Wednesday.
However, the walks and stolen bases Hanson allowed were about to unsettle him.
A situation in the game came when Hanson was vulnerable to leaking runs and therefore to helping Marlins blow the lead. To his fortune, the batters did not capitalise as they gave him a safe passage through his lean period in the game.
"Seven walks and seven stolen bases, to go out and pitch five innings and give up a run, I have no idea how I did that," Hanson said. "I don't even know if that's ever happened. I was just having a hard time locating my fastball and throwing strikes when
I needed to."
By the time Hanson left the mound, relievers stepped in. This was the time when the Marlins had an opportunity to experience a run-rampage and bridge the deficit. At this time, they were trailed by four runs. Therefore, a substantial contribution from their
offence was required.
However, much to their dismay Kris Medlen, who succeeded Hanson, proved even more lethal for them. He struck-out five and threw three innings.
Similarly, Jonny Venters, who did the closing job, was near perfect in finishing the scoreless ninth inning.
For the Marlins’ manager Ozzie Guillen, the game was weird in the sense that despite they came so close to posting runs, they were unable to make the most of the opportunities.
"The game was pretty confusing," Guillen said. "In five innings we stole seven bases, walked seven times, had three doubles, and we score one.”
The Braves will be excited by the idea that they are keeping their second position on the table intact ever since the second half of the season has begun.
They will be looking to carry the momentum forward and keep winning matches.
