Atlanta Braves outclass New York Mets 6-2 as Kris Medlen delivers again - MLB Update
Kris Medlen continues his run of form as the Atlanta Braves outclass the New York Mets 6-2 at Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia in the last game of the three match series on September 30, 2012.
An impressive performance by the offence combined with a solid show by Medlen on the mound blocked the Mets from experiencing the triumph.
Atlanta rose to a three-run lead in the second inning which set the tone for their victory.
From there onward, the Mets showed little resistance offensively and ended up facing the crushing defeat.
They added just two runs throughout the game which in the face of a formidable lead of the Braves were hardly the guarantee of success.
Braves’ catcher David Ross stepped up in the second inning. By hammering for a three-run homer, he provided the team an early lead which then remained intact throughout the rest of the match.
Similarly shortstop Andrelton Simmons struck for a triple. He faced three at-bats and produced two hits while contributing one RBI.
Medlen did an incredible job for the team by throwing six innings and giving up just one run. He rightly protected the lead and barely offered any opportunity to the opposition to score runs.
Ever since Medlen joined the rotation, success rate of the Braves has increased. His inclusion has strengthened their pitching department and has put them in a position to attain something substantial in the season.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins has spoken about his starter Jenrry Mejia on Sunday.
Apart from the throw which was thrashed for a home-run by Ross, Mejia was not entirely bad on the mound.
"I thought he threw the ball good today," Collins said. "He made a real bad throw to Ross, right down the middle. But his two-seamer was the best one I've seen him have."
Atlanta’s manager Fredi Gonzalez intends to lighten the burden on Medlen in order to use him in the post-season.
"If we were able to do that, get him the win, get the team the win and keep him right where we wanted in terms of pitches and innings, that was a good day," Gonzalez said.
Momentum that the Braves have gained in the season is a positive sign heading into the playoffs.
They will be looking to continue their good run until the conclusion of the season.
