Atlanta Braves overcome Miami Marlins after smashing 6 runs in 14th – MLB news
Atlanta Braves overcame Miami Marlins 7-1 in one of the stranger games played this Major League Season at the Marlins Park on Monday, July 8, 2013.
The game was a 1-1 tie until the top of the 14th innings when the Braves’ bats exploded and the ballclub was able to add no less than six runs to take the game away from the hosts.
Gerald Laird, the backup catcher who drove in two RBI’s in the 14th innings thought it was a weird game. He said that the team knew that the Marlins cannot shut them out forever and at some point they will score.
“It's a weird game,” Laird said. “We gave our offense a chance, and we knew we weren't going to get shut out all night.”
The Marlins did a commendable job, retiring 24 batters straight without any one reaching base. This however, changed in a big way in the 14th innings.
Miami Marlins coach Mike Redmond was frustrated that his team blew a few chances to get a big hit and get over the line. Instead, the Braves were able to come out on top at the end of the day.
“We had tons of opportunities and just couldn't get the big hit,” Redmond said. “In those close games, it's going to come down to who's going to get it, and they got it.”
The Marlins scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth innings courtesy of an RBI single by Justin Ruggiano. The score was back on even terms in the top of the sixth with a run being scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Upton.
With players regularly reaching base, a double and two singles were enough to drive in six runs. The Marlins failed to respond when they had a chance to bat and the Braves took home a much needed win on the road.
Despite of struggles on the road, the Atlanta Braves still have an excellent 51-38 winning record this season and remain on top of the National League East ahead of the second placed Washington Nationals by five games. Such good work can go a long way in
easing them in the post-season berth.
