Atlanta Braves overpower San Diego Padres, 8-2: MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves took revenge of the last night’s 5-3 defeat, as the Club overpowered their league rival, the San Diego Padres by 8-2, on Tuesday April 27, and tied the four game series 1-1 at the Petco Park in California.
The Braves shined on both ends of the game and completely entertained more than twenty thousand spectators. The third baseman, Chipper Jones, led the game with a two-run homer off the Padres' starter, Aaron Harang, in the top of the
first inning. It made 1,509 RBIs for Jones that tied him with Hall of Famer, Mickey Mantle, for second place among switch hitters.
"It's really huge to have a guy back there who is as good defensively as anybody in the game but can swing the bat a little bit, too," Jones said. "That's a nice luxury to have. It's not the first time he's done it, either."
Just after Jones, the Braves’ top prospect, David Ross’ bat awoke and he launched a splendid homer to take 3-0 lead in second inning.
However, Harang was not ready to give up the game. He made a comeback and did not allow any run in next three innings, but his momentum was not enough to earn him a win. He again went shaky this time in sixth inning when the Braves’
top slugger, Alex Gonzalez, came into action and hit RBI double to centre-field.
Harang then took the Braves' Nate McLouth with three fast pitches, but Harang again kneeled down in front of Ross. At this time, Ross hammered a huge three-run grand slam to ruin Harang’s outing.
The Braves’ batters hit the ball tremendously on one side, while on the other hand, the starter, Jair Jurrjens, tossed a magical spell. The 25-year-old right-hand hurler pitched nine shutout innings to clinch his second win of the
season. Jurrjens, making is second start, allowed two runs on nine hits, two walks and hit four strikeouts to finish his outing with 1.23 ERA.
Jurrjens received full support from his team-mates as Ross talked about Jurrjens’ performance, "His slider didn't show up until the seventh," Ross said. "How great of him to save our bullpen. But his stuff wasn't as sharp as it normally
is for him. He gave up a lot of hits but he pitched his tale off when guys got on base."
On the other hand, Harang, who had four wins to his name this season, gave eight runs on seven hits, walked three and hit two strikeouts. All three home runs the Braves hit, came off the Harang’s pitches.
The Padres’ reliever Evan Scribner and closer Ernesto Frieri held the braves scoreless in their short spells.
If the Braves kept this form it would not be difficult for them to snatch a series in final meeting of the series on Wednesday April 28.
