Atlanta Braves plunge in Spring Training as they face 0-3 defeat against New York Yankees - MLB
Improved show of starter Julio Teheran falls short of saving Atlanta Braves from plummeting on Grapefruit League table as they record another 0-3 defeat against New York Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida during Spring Training on
March 9, 2012.
Immediately taking a lesson from his Sundays’ outing where he was thrashed for six home-runs in a span of two innings, Teheran threw for three innings and got three strike-outs, gave one walk and was hit thrice while conceding only one run.
"I just forget about that," Teheran said. "Keep pitching, keep throwing and be ready for the season."
Eager to register a spot on the Braves rotation, he is trying to make the most of Spring Training and draw attention of management from there on. Even if his club has lost, he will be pleased the way he held the mound in front of his parents who watched
his display in awe.
Worst part of play for the Braves was their inability to complete a single run, despite couple of hits generated by their hitters. Thanks to handful of walks gifted to them by Freddy Garcia and Douglas Mitchell, Yankees’ starter and reliever respectively,
they were able to collect few singles.
On the other hand, Yankees surged to a lead in very first inning, improving it steadily later till the seventh. Yankees’ batter Nick Swisher while facing Teheran in first found double which was followed by another leadoff double by Russell Martin.
After going for a run in the first, Teheran bounced back strongly, going scoreless in second inning before giving a walk to Curtis Granderson in the third.
Fiercely competing with CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda for opening day roster with the Yankees, Freddy Garcia had moments to relish as he gave up only one hit in three innings and drew two strike-outs while conceding one walk.
"That's vintage Freddy," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "Changed speeds, changed location. Used his split. Pretty much that's Freddy."
Batters employed by Braves including Michael Bourn, Matt Diaz, Freddie Freeman managed just five hits against six pitchers they confronted, something that exposes their frailties before quality throws.
After plunging low on the table, Braves will be searching for a consolation win in upcoming games.
