Atlanta Braves pound Colorado Rockies 6-1 as Kris Medlen throws a complete game - MLB Update
Starter Kris Medlen throws a complete game as the Atlanta Braves pound the Colorado Rockies 6-1 at Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia on September 3, 2012 in the first game of the four match series.
Medlen records his seventh win of the season. By keeping the Rockies scoreless for most part of the game, he did not allow them to challenge the Braves’ lead which was climbing.
The two runs added in the first inning ensured Atlanta an early lead. What took the game away from the Rockies are the four runs that were scored in the third because that made it look unrealistic to expect them to bounce back and win the match from there
onward.
Offensively Braves' catcher David Ross stood out on the plate as the hit gave way to two RBIs. Other than him, Martin Prado who played second base on Monday was impressive. He slammed two hits in three at-bats.
Meanwhile, Atlanta will be content with the fact that their reliever-turned-starter Medlen is turning out to be an instant success.
As he struck-out 12 in nine innings on Monday, he has shown the credentials now for helping the club during the crucial games ahead in the season.
So far his performance in the season is better than those starters on Atlanta's rotation that were supposed to play a major role in the team's success.
Medlen relishes the starting job as he believes the time for rest that it provides allows him to think different ways to improve and throw quality innings. On the other hand when he was a relief pitcher he used to carry out work-outs every day and perform
so many activities for throwing only one or two innings.
"You can just attack guys so differently with an extra pitch, an effective pitch, too," he said. "I got a couple strikeouts with it. You're not throwing as many innings, but you're getting up and warming up just as much as anybody. I love the starting part
because you can get four days to prepare your arm."
Braves’ manager Fredi Gonzalez will be pleased with the performance of Medlen. He will be looking forward to see the rest of the starters on rotation taking inspiration from Medlen.
