Atlanta Braves pound New York Mets 9-3 as Freddie Freeman hits three-run home run - MLB Update
The first baseman Freddie Freeman leads the Atlanta Braves in their 9-3 rout of the New York Mets at Citi Field, New York in the second game of the three match series on August 11, 2012.
The Braves rose to a substantial lead right in the beginning of the game. Therefore, it was just unrealistic to expect the floundering New York offence to help the team bounce back from there.
It was no wonder when Atlanta surged to nine runs in the second inning, the Mets could not reach close to them throughout the game.
The chunk of the damage to New York was done by Braves’ first baseman Freeman. He led for two runs in the first inning by striking a double before he hammered a mammoth three-run homer in the second inning.
Unfortunately for Johan Santana, whose return in the season after recovering from a sprained ankle injury has not been welcome as he was pounded for eight runs in the match in little more than one inning.
Santana is one of the most reliable starters for the Mets. Therefore, his comeback was meant to help the team win matches and improve their standing on the Division table.
However far from this, he has turned out to be a most conspicuous scapegoat for New York on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Santana has claimed that he is not being troubled by the injury anymore and that he will gradually improve as he starts in upcoming games. Facing such an accomplished offence in his first start after the injury did not provide him the chance to
adjust and do some home work properly, he maintains.
"I'm fine. It's just one of those nights I didn't execute my pitches," Santana said. "I didn't feel anything in my ankle, my shoulder, or my whole body. I'm just trying to get my command back. It's been a while since I faced batters of this caliber. I just
need to continue to make some progress and improve my command."
Santana cannot afford to repeat Saturday’s performance in the forthcoming games. He will now go back and rethink his strategy toward the batters. He will be making necessary adjustments in order to fine tune his command and control.
