Atlanta Braves rout Chicago Cubs 10-4 – MLB Update
Dan Uggla had a pair of solo homers on Friday, August 12 to help the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 10-4 and extending his hitting streak to 32 at Turner Field.
Uggla brought home a fascinating win in the first of the three-game series.
The team manager wants Uggla to keep performing up to the mark in order to keep the team on the winning track. "Good for him," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We sure need him to be doing that in the middle of our lineup."
With Carlos Zambrano giving up 8 runs in 4.1 innings, his was the most disappointing spell for the Chicago Cubs. "I'm really disappointed," Quade said. "His locker is empty. He walked out on 24 guys. I don't know where he's gone or what he's doing."
Carlos Zambrano gave up two runs in the second inning when Dan Uggla homered to give his team 1-0 lead followed by a single coming off Jose Constanza’s bat. Mike Minor pitched a strong inning and allowed a run in the third to Reed Johnson that brought the
lead down to 2-1.
However, Chipper Jones was at the best of his form as he hit a three-run homer in the third to give the team a safe 5-1 lead by the end of third inning. Zambrano was proving costly for the team while Mike Minor kept his poise to limit the Cubs’ hitters.
Jose Constanza scored a homer in the fourth to take the lead to 6-1 against the straining Cubs where both offence and defence failed to live up to the expectations. Once Zambrano came in the fifth, he was the target of Uggla once again.
Dan Uggla hit another homer following that of Freddie Freeman that gave the Atlanta Braves an 8-1 lead, prompting the Cubs to start relying on their relievers to contain the Braves’ offence.
Expressing his incredible surprise, Uggla was visibly quite jubilant with his performance and the team’s victory. "It's crazy," Uggla said following his second straight three-hit game. "It's not one of the things I set for a goal when I came over here."
Alfonso Soriano had a two-run RBI, in the sixth, to give some runs to the Cubs. However, the 8-3 score did not last long as Brooks Conrad and Michael Bourn scored a single each to make it 10-3 for the Braves.
Arodys Vizcaino pitched a shut-out eighth while Anthony Varvaro came in the ninth as a closer. Starlin Castro homered but other Cubs’ hitters failed to do anything substantial to stop the Braves from winning the game by 10-5. The Braves put in a tremendous
effort as they managed to convincingly beat the Cubs.
