Atlanta Braves rout Colorado Rockies 7-2 as Freddie Freeman hits three-run homer - MLB Update
Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla hit homers as the Atlanta Braves defeat Colorado Rockies 7-2 at Coors Field, Denver, Colorado on May 6, 2012 in the third game of the series.
It was another game which saw the Braves’ hitters providing immense run-support to their pitchers. Total 162 runs the Braves have scored so far are way more than other teams in their Division.
Even the Washington Nationals, currently top of the table, have just scored 96 runs.
First baseman Freeman is continuing his top-notch performance in the season. By his three-run homer in third inning, he delivered the Braves a solid lead at the start, which later was strengthened further by the hitters.
Chipper Jones keeps the notion of his intermittent in-roads in the season alive. Again not becoming part of the line-up, Juan Francisco replaced him at third-base.
Francisco is turning out a great option in his absence. Maintaining a .239 batting average and .500 slugging percentage thus far in the season, he has not let the Braves miss Jones’ master-class. He went 2-for-3 in the game and added one RBI.
The Braves' starter Brandon Beachy had to do little, in the face of mammoth run-support he had.
In little more than six innings, he conceded four hits and allowed two runs. His season ERA of 1.62 suggests his excellence as a starter. With just one loss, he has grabbed win status thrice this year.
After the game, Beachy talked of how the defence played part in the game and his strategy to get out of weak-counts in case he comes across those.
"I can't say enough about the way we played defense, too," Beachy added. "I can throw some pitches over the plate when I'm behind in the count and let them take their whacks and if it stays in the yard, they've got a pretty good chance of running it down
out there. I just was feeling really good today, getting ahead of guys."
Almost right from beginning of the season, the Braves are holding the second spot on the table. Only reason why the Nationals are ahead of them is their strong arms, an area in which the Braves suffer paucity.
Provided that support from the offence stays consistent and pitchers put up improved shows, there is no reason why the Braves will not have an illustrious 2012 season.
