Atlanta Braves rout Kansas City Royals 6-3 – MLB Recap
Atlanta Braves defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-3 in the first game of their two-match regular series encounter on Tuesday, April 16 at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia.
Braves pitchers did very well on the mound and kept the Royals batters under pressure. Kris Medlen started for Braves and showed good commitment on the mound.
He allowed only two runs on six hits. He received a homer and also allowed one earned run but at the same time he struck out five Royals hitters on his consistent 1.42 ERA.
“You know the power is there," Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez. "That doesn't surprise you. It's nice to have that type of arsenal in your club because it's a game-changer. One swing of the bat and you can put some runs on the board, so that's always nice."
Relief pitcher Eric O'Flaherty also did a good job on the mound as he pitched one inning and only received one hit. He struck out two and maintained his ERA at 2.35.
Closer Luis Avilan also showed his natural game and kept the Royals batters under pressure. He received one hit and one run and sustained his ERA at 2.08.
Along with pitchers, the Braves hitters also played well and provide good opportunity to their team who easily out classed the Royals.
Right fielder Jason Heyward scored one run for the Braves. He also ran for an RBI and maintained his slugging percentage of .279.
Left fielder Justin Upton also did well on the plate as he scored one run on one hits on his four at bats. He also ran for an RBI and proved too good for the Royals pitchers.
“It's fun when you can do that," Upton said. "But our goal is to go out and play good baseball every night, pitch well, play good defense, put together good at-bats and we've been able to do that so far."
On the other hand, the Royals pitchers especially starter Jeremy Guthrie did not play well and certainly lost the game for his team. He received five hits and two runs along with two homers and two earned runs on his seven innings’ spell.
