Atlanta Braves rout New York Mets 6-1 as Freddie Freeman strikes three run homer - MLB Update
Right fielder Jason Heyward and first baseman Freddie Freeman lead the charge in the fifth as they take the Atlanta Braves to an overwhelming 6-1 victory against the New York Mets on July 15, 2012 at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Braves seem to be focused on winning games, irrespective of the starter they face and the opposition they come across. On Sunday, Mets’ ace Johan Santana was made to look ordinary on the mound as Atlanta enjoyed a run-rampage from his throws.
Santana threw five innings and leaked eight hits. While he struck-out three, he gave up six runs.
For first four innings, Santana was in control, but it took just one inning to see him losing command and allowing a run-spree, which led to his loss eventually.
Furthermore, Santana stated after the match that while he was good by and large, only a handful of poor throws destroyed the whole effort.
"We felt that we threw good pitches and didn't get the call," he said. "It's tough when you have a game like this and one pitch could be the difference in the game. I didn't question anything, and it's too bad that a couple of pitches changed the whole ballgame."
As far as the Braves’ offence was concerned, Chipper Jones, Freeman and Heyward came to up the ante.
Jones struck two hits in four at-bats. Similarly, Freeman slammed a productive home-run as three runs had been scored as a result of it.
Meanwhile, a scoreless spell of six innings by Ben Sheets was the story of the day.
As he was brought to the Majors as a makeshift attempt by the Braves to fill the void of absence by Brandon Beachy, manager Fredi Gonzalez will be extremely pleased now.
Gonzalez praised Sheets. In-particular, he was impressed by an impeccable command he showed in the game.
"He mixed his pitches well, and his command was outstanding," Gonzalez said. "A little better than I thought it would be the first time out. He gave us a h**l of an opportunity to win the ball game."
After winning the game, Atlanta can be optimistic about maintaining their second position on the National League East Division table.
