Atlanta Braves’ third-baseman Chipper Jones is 14 RBIs short of milestone – MLB News
As Future Hall of Famer, the Atlanta Braves’ third-baseman Chipper Jones nears his last season, he will be eager to accomplish some milestones at the earliest. One of those is contributing 14 more RBIs and going past two legends of the game, Mike Schmidt
and George Brett.
Every player possesses record of his own and that does not necessarily have to be similar to what by-gone masters of the game have achieved.
As this landmark achievement comes nearer, Jones will be having surprise excitements hitting his mind.
He will however like to focus on his play and show his best on the plate, instead of taking mania of it and affecting his performance as a result.
Jones acknowledges the maestro George Brett and Mike Schmidt and discusses as to how effective they have been as a hitter.
In a response to his comparison with them, Jones stated that he was not a third-baseman at-first and only later in his career he assumed a position there. Therefore, he has not seen these two players from the perspective of his own place on the ballpark.
“When I was growing up those were the two third baseman, one in each league,” Jones said. “You’ve got one who’s won multiple MVPs in the National League, and George Brett was widely considered as the best pure hitter, maybe him and [Rod] Carew in the American
League. While I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to them because I wasn’t a third baseman back then -- I was a shortstop -- you still paid attention to the best in the game. And they were the best in the business at third base.”
In last game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, Jones came late in the line-up. He was unable to add anything to his quest for achieving an above-mentioned historic landmark, as he went hitless and did not contribute any RBI.
For players like Jones, records hardly matter. More often they go their normal way and in the process they bag distinctions. Barely do they make them as sole purpose of their play.
Given this, one can expect that Jones will become the highest contributor of RBIs as a third-baseman, with few more weeks down in the season.
