Atlanta Braves thrash Houston Astros 6-1 as Chipper Jones and Paul Janish lead the offence - MLB
The third baseman Chipper Jones and the shortstop Paul Janish power the Atlanta Braves to 6-1 victory against the Houston Astros at Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia on August 5, 2012 in the last game of the three match series.
The Braves continue strengthening their second position on the National League East Division table. The pace with which they are going, a slight decline from the part of the table leader, the Washington Nationals, can result in their taking over the position.
On Sunday, Braves found little resistance on their way to record the victory.
They leaped to a one run lead in the second before the series of scoreless innings ensued. It was the bottom of the sixth then that saw Atlanta adding three more runs.
Afterwards, with relievers going through scoreless innings, Atlanta embraced the triumph.
Jones struck two hits in four at-bats, while adding one RBI. Besides, shortstop Janish’s hit gave way to two RBIs.
As far as the Braves’ pitchers were concerned, their starter Kris Medlen threw little more than five innings. He struck-out six and gave up one run.
What ensured success of the Braves in the game were their relievers.
Reinforcing the notion of a solid bullpen by Atlanta in the season, the hurlers like Jonny Venters and Chad Durbin were immaculate in their throws. Far from permitting batters to launch a counter attack against the Braves, they restricted them from scoring
runs.
Meanwhile, Jones who supplied bulk of the contribution offensively on Sunday, comments on the position that Atlanta is maintaining on the table currently. Few games behind the Nationals, Jones is looking forward to see the Braves claiming the top spot on
table.
"They're a good ballclub," Jones said. "We're going to have to go get them. They're not going to come back to the pack. All you can do is try to hold serve at home. An 8-2 homestand, we'll take that any day of the week."
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez showers praise on Jones, terming him the most prolific batter he has ever come across.
"Chipper is a Hall of Famer," Fredi Gonzalez said. "He may be the best player I've ever seen play the game."
The way Braves are playing in the season, the manager will like players to keep the momentum going in upcoming games.
