Atlanta Braves topple New York Yankees 4-3 as Craig Kimbrel throws scoreless ninth - MLB Update
Craig Kimbrel, along with rest of the relievers, throws a scoreless ninth inning as he helps the Atlanta Braves topple the New York Yankees 4-3 in second game of the three match series on June 19, 2012 at Yankee Stadium, New York, NY.
Finally, the Yankees experience defeat after routing most of the sides in the National League East Division, including the table leader the Washington Nationals.
Braves played to their strength and managed to keep the Yankees at bay.
Situation reached a level on Tuesday from where the Yankees have been stealing stunning victories in the last few weeks. Beyond the sixth, they had ample time to go on a rampage and win, just as they did against the Nationals and the New York Mets, on a
number of occasions.
This time however, they had to battle with stronger bullpen and thus whatever attempt they made to break in was put to halt befittingly.
Tim Hudson started for the Braves. In five innings, he gave up three runs and walked five, while striking-out five. Atlanta’s strategy to bring relievers after the fifth proved effective.
Had Hudson continued, he may have allowed few more runs, which were to be costly, to an extent of resulting into the defeat.
Craig Kimbrel carried out the closing job for Braves. Registering the 20th save of the season, Kimbrel finished the perfect ninth. Under pressure, Kimbrel did not succumb to the situation and kept his nerves until he took the team home.
Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward lifted the Braves’ offence. Jones went 1-for-3. Similarly, Heyward managed two hits in three at-bats.
Jones however erred in the field. He regretted that he may have made the play.
"You play third base, you know you're going to have the lowest-fielding percentage in the infield," Jones said. "You get some rockets, some balls with topspin. The big thing on that play was the pick. Once I picked it, I could make the throw and Mac set
a nice target."
As the series is now levelled, the Braves have a best chance to restart their quest for the season. They will like to win the next match and clinch the series victory.
