Atlanta Braves whitewash San Diego Padres, 3-0, and clinch the series, 7-0: MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves shutout the league's rival San Diego Padres 3-0, romping to a 7-0 victory in the third outing of their Major League Baseball series at the Petco Park in California on Wednesday night.
The National League's Braves, started positively in first inning with touching a single with bat and restricting the opposition scoreless. The single was scored by the third baseman, Chipper Jones, who chipped for runs batted in (RBI) single that led him
past Mickey Mantle with 1,512 RBIs. With this achievement, Jones acquired the second place among switch-hitters after Hall of Famer Murray, who tops the list at 1,917 RBIs.
Besides, this single, Chipper combined an RBI double in five-runs second inning. The left fielder, Martin Prado, added RBI double and the catcher, Brian McCann, sliced RBI single in the second inning, taking the lead to 6-0.
Chipper seemed excited of the record and was eager to explain his condition. Chipper said, "It's gratifying. I look at the numbers as me just going out and doing my job. That's the way I've always approached it. I never really thought about my place or anything
like that. When you grew up hearing about Mickey the way I did, and with the reverence that I heard, to pass him in career RBIs, that's quite a feat."
The Padres, who were already struggling with bat, totally succumbed to the stress and made just four hits, but none of these were score generating. Onthe other hand, the Braves’ hitter, Jason Heyward, scored one more run for the Club in the ninth inning.
The Braves’ starter, Tommy Hanson, had a remarkable outing with the ball, as the starter struckout 10 batters to cement his third win of the season. Hanson, pitched seven innings, allowed just four hits and one walk to achieve first series sweep for the
Club in 2011.
The right-hand hurler shutout the opposition, however, he gave full credit to the batters saying, "Getting that lead always helps, and it was just one of those days where all four of my pitches were working. I was getting outs with all four of my pitches.
I kept them off-balance pretty good."
The reliever, Cory Gearrin, and closer, Craig Kimbrel, provided a strong back-up to Hanson, tossing their hitless innings. However, it was not the day of the Padres’ pitchers either, as the starter, Mat Latos, received six runs on seven hits for his fourth
loss of the season. Though Latos made a comeback after giving six early runs, yet it did not help the Club avoid their seventh shutout in 25 games.
The relievers, Chris Luebke and Luke Gregerson, held the Padres scoreless in their one-inning spell each, but closer Evan Scribner tossed a wobbly pitch for a run giving.
The Padres, now, must be looking to change some radical changes in their squad for the up coming series against Los Angeles Dodgers starting on Thursday April 29.
