Atlanta Braves win a difficult encounter against St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 – MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves put in a good performance to defeat St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 at Turner Field, Atlanta on Sunday, May 1.
Cardinals’ bullpen witnessed a major failure on Sunday night to lose a clearly winning match. St. Louis, who had secured a comfortable 4-0 lead in the fourth inning could hardly stop the Braves from coming back into the game and take the victory away from
them. It was Brooks Conrad, who hit the winning hit, generating wild enthusiasm on the field and the whole team gathered around him.
"I was running to first, and I saw that it finally dropped and was thinking, 'Hey, one of those finally fell in there.' It felt good," said Conrad, was 1-for-12 as a pinch-hitter. "He was throwing me some tough pitches inside, and with one out, I was trying
to keep the ball off the ground and stay out of the double play. That last one, I was able to get enough on it to get it out to the outfield."
Sunday’s game kicked off with the Cardinals’ offence going for early runs. Matt Holliday was the first to open the account for the team. He doubled to deep left to give the Cardinals their first run. Derek Lowe knew little that a lot was coming ahead. This
time it was Lance Berkman who came with a double, making it a 3-0 lead for the Cardinals.
St. Louis seemed to have made a comfortable lead and they were right. Jaime Garcia who had come out to pitch for the Cardinals was effective and did not let the Braves go for any hit. The Cardinals made it 4-0 in the fifth inning from Albert Pujols’ single.
However, from there onwards things started changing, as the Braves relentlessly went after the otherwise unplayable Garcia and scored three runs in the fifth inning. First, Alex Gonzalez’s two-runs brought the Braves closer to the Cardinals’ score. Gonzalez
then did it with another single in the seventh inning, levelling the score 4-4.
The Braves got a lead with Prado’s single. This made the score 5-4 for Atlanta. However, Yadier Molina compensated it with a single, once again levelling the score 5-5.
The star that shone on Sunday night was Conrad who struck a match-winning single to give an edgy 6-5 victory to Atlanta.
