Atlanta Dream and Connecticut Sun win - WNBA Roundup August 7, 2011- Part 1
Four games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Sunday, August 7, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
Atlanta Dream 70 vs. Seattle Storm 53
On Sunday night, Atlanta Dream headed all the four quarters of the game and halted their two-game losing streak with a 70-53 victory over the defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm at Philips Arena.
Angel McCoughtry punctuated a game-high 17 points on 7 of 20 shooting from the field while Erika de Souza added 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Dream, who have won six of their previous ten games. De Souza ended
with 6 for 10 shooting from the field. Coco Miller also came off the bench with 10 points and four rebounds in the victory.
Swin Cash headed Seattle with 16 points, three rebounds and two steals in more than 31 minutes and Katie Smith contributed 11 points and six rebounds for Storm, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
Atlanta shot 42.3 percent from the field and held Storm to just 38 percent (19 for 50). Seattle also committed 27 turnovers as compared to just 17 by the Dream. McCoughtry scored nine of her points in the first half as Atlanta
held a 12-point lead, 34-22, at halftime and by the time, the third quarter ended, Dream stretched their lead to 16 points. Seattle entered the fourth quarter facing a huge task and did not get any closer than 14 points.
Connecticut Sun 96 - Phoenix Mercury 95
At US Airways Center, Tina Charles hit a 12-footer jumper with just five ticks to go in first overtime as Connecticut Sun defeated Phoenix Mercury 96-95.
Renee Montgomery led Connecticut with 28 points and three assists. Asjha Jones added 27 points on a 13 for 18 shooting from the floor while Charles finished with 17 rebounds and 23 points in the victory. Charles also had four assists
and two blocks for Sun, who have won seven of their previous 10 games.
Diana Taurasi topped all the scorers with 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists. The player pinned 10 of 10 free throws on the night. DeWanna Bonner came off the bench with 24 points and 11 rebounds for Mercury, who have lost
five of their last 10 games.
Penny Taylor totalled 13 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals in the loss while Candice Dupree recorded a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds and 10 points for the Mercury. Connecticut shot 45.2 percent from
the field while Phoenix shot just 38.2 percent.
Phoenix held a 46-41 lead at halftime, but Connecticut turned it on the third period and converted the five-point first half deficit into a five-point lead, 69-64, heading into the fourth.
Mercury fought back in the fourth period and tied the game at 84, sending it into overtime. They held a 95-92 lead with 59 ticks to go in the O.T, before Jones responded with a jumper to cut the margin to one.
With just five seconds to go in the final buzzer, Charles hit a jumper to put Connecticut ahead by one and then saw Mercury’s Taurasi and Dupree miss jumpers in the closing seconds of the game.
