Atlanta Dream and Minnesota Lynx Win - WNBA Roundup July 16, 2011
On Saturday night, two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of these games:
Atlanta Dream 76 – Chicago Sky 68
At Philips Arena, four Dream starters reached double figures as Atlanta halted their two-game losing streak with a 76-68 victory over Chicago Sky.
Angel McCoughtry totalled a game-high 24 points, five rebounds and four steals while Lindsey Harding had a strong all-around game for Dream with 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block. Armintie Price recorded
a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists. Price also contributed six assists and two steals in the victory. Erika de Souza finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for Dream, who have won two of their previous four games.
Sylvia Fowles led Sky with 20 points, 11 rebounds and a game best eight blocks. Cathrine Kraayeveld came off the bench with 12 points while Michelle Snow had 11 points and 12 rebounds in Chicago’s fifth consecutive defeat on the
road. Epiphanny Prince also scored 11 points and stole the ball five times in the loss.
Atlanta opened the first quarter on a 9-0 run and carried a 20-11 lead into the second. Chicago however outscored Dream 22-13 in the second period and tied the game at 33-33, heading into the locker room.
In a closely contested third quarter, Sky managed to take a two-point lead into the last quarter. Dream however bounced back and scored eight consecutive points at the start of the fourth quarter to go ahead by 60-54. Fowles nailed
two consecutive shots with two minutes to go in the fourth make it a four-point contest, 72-68, but Atlanta responded with four answered points in the last minute of the game to seal the victory.
Minnesota Lynx 69 – Seattle Storm 62
Seimone Augustus had 19 points, five rebounds and three steals as Minnesota Lynx beat the Seattle Storm 69-62 at Target Center for their second straight victory.
Rebekkah Brunson posted 16 points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked two shots while Lindsay Whalen racked up 13 points for Minnesota.
Tanisha Wright led Storm with 18 points, Swin Cash chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds while Sue Bird tallied 15 points in the second consecutive defeat of Seattle.
Augustus and Brunson scored eight of their points in the first half of the game as Minnesota held a 35-26 lead at halftime. Lynx scored the first 12 points on the third quarter and raced to a 47-26 lead early in the quarter. Storm
managed to cut the deficit to 12 points, 50-38, but McWilliams-Franklin’s jumper in the last minute of the third frame gave Minnesota a 52-38 advantage, going into the last quarter. Lynx maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter and walked away with
their ninth victory of this season.
