Atlanta Dream and Minnesota Lynx Win - WNBA Roundup July 20, 2011
On Wednesday night, two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here is a brief review of the two games:
Atlanta Dream 86 – Washington Mystics 79
At Verizon Center, Angel McCoughtry racked up a season-high 33 points as Atlanta Dream beat Washington Mystics 86-79 for their third consecutive victory.
McCoughtry shot 10 for 18 from the field, including 2 for 3 from three-point range, and 11 for 17 from free throw line.
Lindsey Harding tallied 14 points while Armintie Price added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory. Erika de Souza had 10 points and four rebounds while Sandora Irvin pulled down 11 rebounds for
Atlanta. Alison Bales grabbed 10 rebounds for the Dream, who have won three of their previous five games.
Crystal Langhorne contributed 24 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead the Mystics. Marissa Coleman scored 21 points and Matee Ajavon had 12 points and four assists for the Mystics, who have lost six of their
previous seven games.  Jasmine Thomas came off the bench with 10 points in the loss.
McCoughtry scored 20 of her points in the first half of the game as Atlanta carried a 39-38 lead into the locker room. Washington came back into the game in the third quarter and tied the game at 63, heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Mystics pulled away a bit and held a 78-76 advantage with 02:14 to go in the quarter. However, the defending Eastern Conference Champions then turned it on down the stretch and scored 10 points in the
last two minutes of the games to seal the victory.
Minnesota Lynx 106 – Phoenix Mercury 98
All of the starters scored in double figures as Minnesota Lynx snapped the six-game winning streak of Phoenix Mercury with a 106-98 at US Airways Center. The defeat pushed Phoenix out of first place in the Western Conference.
Seimone Augustus tied her career high with 25 points on an 11 for 15 shooting from the field. The player also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists in the win. Lindsay Whalen scored 16 points while Maya Moore posted
14 points for the Lynx, who are leading the league with a 10-4 record so far in this season. Rebekkah Brunson and Taj McWilliams-Franklin also scored 14 points apiece in third consecutive victory of Minnesota.
Diana Taurasi pinned 12 of 14 free throws on her way to a team-high 24 points. Penny Taylor notched 23 points and five assists while Candice Dupree filled the score sheet for 14 points and seven rebounds in the defeat. DeWanna
Bonner scored 12 points off the bench and grabbed seven rebounds for Phoenix.
In a closely contested first half, Phoenix managed to take a 51-50 lead at halftime. However, Minnesota outscored Mercury 32-22 in the third quarter, taking an 82-73 advantage into the fourth. Lynx maintained their lead throughout
the last quarter to walk away with their tenth victory of this season.
