Atlanta Dream and Minnesota Lynx win - WNBA Roundup June 30th 2011
On June 30, two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Here are the highlights of the games:
Atlanta Dream 87 - New York Liberty 81
Erika DeSouza tied a career high with 27 points, shooting 11 for 16 from the field, and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds as the Atlanta Dream knocked out New York Liberty 87-81 at Philips Arena. The victory snapped the two-game
losing streak of Atlanta.
DeSouza, who is averaging 12.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game this season, said at the end of the game, "Having lost the past few games, everybody was angry." "So we were focused and just did our best."
Lindsey Harding added 25 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Dream, who limited the visiting team to just 37.9 percent from the field. The 27-year-old guard shot 9 for 13 from the field and 6 for 7 from free throw line.
Cappie Pondexter led Liberty with 24 points, six assists, two rebounds and two steals. Pondexter hit a brilliant 10 for 10 from free throw line and 4 of 7 from three-point range. Essence Carson contributed 12 points and three rebounds
off the bench while Kia Vaughn totalled 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Liberty got off to a good start and held a 12-5 lead on their way to a 24-16 advantage into the second. They continued to play aggressively and went on a 6-2 run in the last two minutes of the second quarter, taking a 44-37 edge
into the locker room.
Dream however outscored New York 25-19 in the third quarter and by the time the third quarter finally ended, they were only one behind at 63-62. What followed was a scramble and both teams were tied at 72-72 midway through the
frame. However, Dream outscored Liberty 15-9 in the remaining stretch to snatch the win.
Minnesota Lynx 101 – Tulsa Shock 70
Lindsay Whalen scored 13 of her game high 21 points in the second quarter as Minnesota Lynx beat Tulsa Shock by a 31-point margin, 101-70, at BOK Center.
Whalen also dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds for Minnesota, who snapped their two-game losing streak. Candice Wiggins came off the bench with 18 points while Rebekkah Brunson ended up with 12 points. Maya Moore
also had 11 points and seven rebounds on the night.
For Shock, Ivory Latta scored a team-high 13 points and Kayla Pedersen posted 12 points, five assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Tiffany Jackson and Jennifer Lacy scored 11 points apiece in Tulsa’s fourth straight
defeat.
Minnesota limited the Shock to just 30 points in the first half and held a 24-point lead, 54-30, at halftime. Lynx extended their lead to 26 points early in the third quarter and maintained their double-digit lead until the end
of the game, finishing with a season-high scoring total.
