Atlanta Dream down Connecticut Sun; San Antonio rout L.A. Sparks - WNBA Sep.6 Review
Two games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Here is a brief review of the two games:
Atlanta Dream 85 - Connecticut Sun 74
At Philips Arena, Angel McCoughtry topped all scorers with 35 points, including 20 of them in the second half, as Atlanta Dream cruise past Connecticut Sun 85-74 and moved into third place in the Eastern Conference.
McCoughtry also contributed five rebounds, four assists and three blocks. The 24-year-old forward went 12 for 23 from the field and 10 for 13 from free throw line. Sancho Lyttle added 12 rebounds and 12 points while Iziane Castro Marques came off the bench with 11 points in Atlanta’s third consecutive victory.
Tina Charles recorded 22nd double-double of this season with 12 rebounds and 17 points in the loss, matching the league record she set last year. Renee Montgomery added 16 points, seven assists and four steals while Kara Lawson had 11 points for Sun, who saw their two-game winning streak snapped.
Bothe teams scored 20 points each in the first quarter but Atlanta turned it on in the second quarter and outscored the visiting team 28-22, taking a 48-42 lead into the locker room. Dream limited Connecticut to 13 points in the third period and stretched their lead to 66-55, heading into the fourth. Sun did not get any closer than three points in fourth quarter as Atlanta sealed their 19th victory of the season.
San Antonio Silver Stars 82 - Los Angeles Sparks 65
Becky Hammon tallied 17 of her season-high 37 points in the last quarter as San Antonio Silver Stars clinched final playoff berth in the Western Conference with an 82-65 win over Los Angeles Sparks at Staples Center.
Hammon also added five assists, four rebounds and two steals in the victory. The veteran guard shot 14 for 19 shooting from the floor, including 4 for 7 from three-point range and 5 for 5 from free throw line.
Tully Bevilaqua had 11 points and five rebounds while Jia Perkins added 10 points, five rebounds and two steals for San Antonio.
Los Angeles’ forward Tina Thompson scored a team-high 18 points, grabbed six rebounds, stole the ball r three times and dished out three assists. DeLisha Milton-Jones had 16 points and eight rebounds while Kristi Toliver posted 13 points for Sparks. Candace Parker finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists in Los Angeles’ second consecutive loss.
Hammon scored 11 of her points in the first half and Silver Stars held a 39-34 lead at halftime. Sparks limited the visiting team to 17 points in the third quarter and trimmed their deficit to two, 56-54. San Antonio outscored Los Angeles 26-11 in the fourth quarter and walked away with one of their most important victories of this season.
