Atlanta Dream rout Tulsa Shock; Minnesota Lynx humble N.Y. Liberty – WNBA September.4 Review: Part 1
Four games took place in Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) on Sunday, September 4, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
Atlanta Dream 73 – Tulsa Shock 52
Angel McCoughtry scored a game-high 19 points, including 10 in the second quarter, as Atlanta Dream clinched a playoff spot with a 73-52 victory over the WNBA-worse Tulsa Shock at Philips Arena. It was second consecutive victory for the Dream and third straight loss for Tulsa.
McCoughtry ended the game with five rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Lindsey Harding had 13 points and 10 assists in the victory. Armintie Price contributed 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Sancho Lyttle totalled 10 points and four steals for Atlanta.
Tiffany Jackson led Tulsa with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Amber Holt added 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals in the losing effort.
Atlanta shot 44.9 percent from the field and limited Shock to only 28.1 percent. The Dream committed 15 turnovers as compared to 24 by the visiting team.
McCoughtry scored 14 of her points in the first half of the game as Atlanta carried a ten-point lead, 36-26, into the locker room. Dream outscored Tulsa 23-15 in the third quarter and stretched their lead to 59-41. Atlanta maintained their double-digit lead throughout fourth quarter and sealed 18th victory of this season.
Minnesota Lynx 86 - New York Liberty 68
Maya Moore had 19 points and six rebounds as the league-best Minnesota Lynx cruised past New York Liberty 86-68 at Prudential Center, snapping their three-game home losing streak. The victory also halted New York’s two-game winning streak.
Seimone Augustus and Amber Harris chipped in 12 points each while Candice Wiggins racked up 11 points for Minnesota. Rebekkah Brunson also had 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Plenette Pierson headed Liberty with 17 points and eight rebounds and Nicole Powell added 10 points in the loss. Lynx were hot from the floor on the night and shot 54.0 percent from the field while Liberty managed a meagre 35.7 percent effort.
Minnesota held an 11-point lead, 52-41, at halftime and outplayed New York 15-5 in the third quarter, pushing their lead to 67-46. Lynx maintained their lead in the last quarter and walked away with another huge victory of this season.
