Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week
Angel McCoughtry of the Atlanta Dream has been named as the Eastern Conference ‘Player of the Week’ for games played form Monday, August 15 through Sunday, August 21. Joining McCoughtry for award this week was Candace Parker of
the Los Angeles Sparks, who won it in the Western Conference.
McCoughtry and Parker beat out Chicago Sky’s Sylvia Fowles, Indiana Fever’s Tamika Catchings, New York Liberty’s Cappie Pondexter, Phoenix Mercury’s Penny Taylor, Seattle Storm’s Sue Bird and Washington Mystics Crystal Langhorne
for the honours.
McCoughtry led the Dream to a 2-1 week, which included two consecutive victories over Connecticut Sun and the Los Angeles Sparks. Atlanta are at present fourth in the East this season and have won 10 of their previous 14 games.
McCoughtry averaged league and conference second-best 23.7 points per game in the period under the scanner. In addition to that, she ranked third in the East with 1.3 blocks, fourth with 4.3 steals, fifth with 8.3 rebounds and
also tied for the fifth with 2.33 steals per game.
So far in this season, the University of Louisville product is averaging 20.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
It was the third time the Dream’s forward has received the honour this season and fifth in her WNBA career.

August 19 vs. Connecticut Sun
McCoughtry’s best game of the week came against the East’s second best Connecticut Sun on Friday, August 19, when she recorded a double-double in their 94-88 overtime over Connecticut. McCoughtry scored a game-high 26 points and
grabbed her season high 12 rebounds in Atlanta’s second consecutive victory.
During her 35 and half minutes on the floor, the 24-year-old blocked a crucial shot at the end of regulation to force overtime and scored a pair of key baskets in the extra five minutes of the game.
Atlanta coach Marynell Meadors praised the outstanding performance of her player and said, “She is a winner,” “She finds a way to score and she finds a way to defend. That block she made at the end of the game was huge.”
The No. 1 overall draft pick also dished out four assists, stole the ball three times and blocked two shots. She went 9 for 22 from the field and 8 for 12 from free throw line.
August 16 vs. Los Angeles Sparks
In the second game of the week, McCoughtry amassed 23 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals in an 84-79 win over Los Angeles Sparks at Staples Center. The 2009 ‘Rookie of the Year’ finished with an 8 for 15 shooting
from the floor and 7 for 10 from the line.
August 21 vs. Connecticut
At Mohegan Sun Arena, the Baltimore native closed last week with a game best 22 points in Dream’s 96-87 defeat to Connecticut Sun. McCoughtry also contributed nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks in the loss.
The player pinned 7 of 9 free throws in more than 34 minutes of action.
