Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White sorry for offensive tweets - NFL News
With many players having official accounts on social media platform Twitter and the unique manner in which it allows professionals and fans to interact it does not take long for a wrong tweet to create an unwanted controversy.
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, Roddy White is the latest player to get embroiled in a Twitter controversy after his tweets earlier in the week led to a huge backlash by fans.
White on Thursday, apologised for his offensive remarks on his official Twitter account.
“OK people I apologize for saying the word g*y I know it's a sensitive subject and a athlete of my stature should not use it.”
The whole controversy started after a simple question by one of his followers.
The receiver was asked by a fan whether he preferred leading the National Football League (NFL) in stats or if he preferred a Super Bowl trophy.
White answered with a tweet that shocked his fans.
"Would u rather be g*y or straight come on u know that answer?"
The comment on sexuality led to fans condemning his comments but the receiver fired back with.
"Freedom of speech. I don't care how much money I make. I should be held to my own standards and not the standards of other oopinion.#period."
In the next tweet he went on to say.
"... every time somebody says the word g*y u want to get your panties in a bunch relax #whyusoemotional."
Just goes to show how one small statement on the internet can be blown into a full controversy in a matter of seconds.
This is not the first nor will it be the last time that professional sports players have created unwanted controversy on the social media platform with their statements.
White and the Falcons once again failed to move beyond the first round of the playoffs in the 2011-12 season after losing 24-2 in the wildcard round to eventual Super Bowl winners New York Giants.
The Falcons ended the regular season 10-6 and played well but could not shake off their capacity for choking during big games.
White individually though had a brilliant season as he gained 1,296 yards from 100 receptions and scored eight touchdowns.
