Atlanta Falcons have the best investment in the playoffs
Out of all the teams currently in the playoffs, the Atlanta Falcons are getting the most out of their investment. Why is that?
With eight teams in the playoffs, the Falcons’ combined salary for all of their players is $121.3 million. Although this is an extravagant amount, it’s even more surprising that their total salary is the least out of all the
teams in the playoffs. They will be playing against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday at Georgia Dome in the NFC divisional playoff. The Packers' total team salary is $153.9 million.
“The team is in a very good place,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said. “We continue to support our football department with resources the very best that we can. We are not in the top quarter of teams in terms of revenue in the
NFL.”
In order to get the new outdoor stadium that they are pushing for, the Falcons have to increase their revenue. Unlike teams like the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins, the Falcons are not allowed to
spend as much as they would like on their players. Blank said, “We are working towards a new stadium eventually, and that will help us. But we do what we can, which is obviously very competitive.”
Besides Green Bay and Atlanta, the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks are the other two NFC teams fighting to win this week. “Da Bears” currently spend $134.6 million on their team salary, while the Seahawks have a team total
$140.9 million.
On the other side of the league is the American Football Conference (AFC). The New York Jets have the highest total player salary at $138.4 million. New England comes in at second with $133.5 million. The Baltimore Ravens are
in third, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are in fourth with $126.8 and $126.3 million total salaries, respectively.
In the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the lowest team salary at $83.2 million, while the Jacksonville Jaguars are second to last with $96 million.
Shockingly enough, the total salary for all the players in all eight playoff teams is $1.075 billion. That’s roughly the equivalent to the GDP of Samoa, yes, the little island off of the coast of New Zealand.
Players receive a $21,000 bonus for winning in divisional playoff games, while receiving $38,000 if they win the championship game. Super Bowl winners receive $83,000 while the losers receive $42,000.
Despite all the monetary incentives, what players really want is to get a championship ring.
“What motivates us is winning a Super Bowl ring,” Falcons wide receiver Roddy White said. “Playoff money is just extra incentive. Guys just usually spend it on vacation in the off-season. Our goal is to get to (Arlington, Texas),
win it all and get us a ring.”
