Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith wants to end postseason woes - NFL News
One achievement continues to remain out of the hands of Atlanta Falcons and their head coach, Mike Smith, that is getting the franchise past the first hurdle in the postseason.
During Smith’s four seasons at the franchise, the Falcons have qualified thrice for the playoffs one of which was when they made it to the divisional round of the playoffs after winning the National Football Conference (NFC) South division.
However, all three times, the Falcons have fallen at the first hurdle and their performance in last season’s wildcard game against the New York Giants was the worst of the three.
The Falcons talented roster boasting the likes of quarterback, Matt Ryan and wide receivers, Julio Jones and Roddy White failed to score a single point against the Giants and the franchise were knocked out of the playoffs after a 24-2 defeat.
In the regular season though, the franchise have consistently delivered winning seasons under coach Mike Smith but, the head coach believes that his tenure will be judged on whether his team deliver in the postseason where it really matters.
Speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday, Smith said:
"I think ultimately we are both going to be judged on success in the postseason."
Adding further he said:
"There have been a lot of teams and a lot of players that have broken through and gotten that first win. That's why we are doing everything in our power to figure out how to get that done.”
The head coach was asked whether the problems their biggest rivals New Orleans Saints are facing due to the bounty scandal will help the Falcons once again win the South division.
He replied:
"I don't necessarily believe that. I know that the NFC South has been one the most competitive divisions for a number of years. Most certainly before I got to the Falcons, there was the worst-to-first story for three or four years. It's very competitive."
The Falcons boast a talented roster in offence and they will have to get over the mental barrier that affects them in the postseason to end their long running problem to win games in the playoffs.
