Atlanta Falcons tender Brent Grimes and Jason Snelling – NFL news
Cornerback Brent Grimes has had a first-round tender placed on him by the Atlanta Falcons, according to a local newspaper in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
The Pro Bowl cornerback is one of the key players in the Falcons’ defence and was targeted 119 times by opponents in the 2010 season, according to the newspaper. The four-year professional responded with 87 tackles, the most in his career, and five interceptions,
one less than his career-high six interceptions in the 2009 season.
The 5 ft 10”, 181-pound cornerback from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006. In his first professional game on 23 December, 2007, he led the Falcons in tackles with 11 in the game. During his rookie season,
he played in only two games and had a total of 12 tackles.
In 2008, Grimes started in 6 of the 12 games that he played in, recording 34 tackles, four of which were solo. He also defended six passes and had one interception, which he returned for 25 yards. He started his first game on 7 September, 2008 and had six
tackles in that game. He had an even better season in 2009, starting eight games during the season but seeing action in all 16 of them. He had 66 tackles, only four of which were assisted, and also deflected 13 passes. He also had six interceptions, the highest
number of interceptions on the team, which he returned for total of 17 yards.
Grimes started in all 16 games of the 2010 season and saw his best season as a starter. He racked up 87 tackles and 23 deflected passes, which is the highest in the League. He is considered one of the top corners in 2011 since he is technically a free agent.
He was also named for his first Pro Bowl in 2011 after Charles Woodson, cornerback for the Green Bay Packers, went to the Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The same newspaper also said that the team has placed a second-round tender on backup running back Jason Snelling. Snelling, also known as “Snell Bell” due to his dominating running style, was drafted 244th overall in the seventh round of the
2007 NFL Draft by the Falcons. In 2007, he played in seven games but started none. He rushed 13 times for 43 yards and one touchdown. In 2008, he started in one of the 16 games that he played in and rushed 15 times for 62 yards. He also had eight receptions
for 89 yards.
Snelling’s best season came in 2009 when he rushed 142 times for 613 yards for four touchdowns and also had 30 receptions for 259 yards and one touchdown.
However, none of these tenders matter until and unless a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is instated.
