Atlanta Falcons will look to passing game to deliver in 2012 season - NFL News
The Atlanta Falcons are looking to change things around in offence this year according to assistant offensive coach, Andrew Weidinger, as they target a return to the playoffs once again and to progress beyond the first round of the postseason.
Atlanta Falcons have been regular qualifiers to the postseason ever since head coach, Mike Smith, took over the helm.
However, the franchise which delivers each year in the regular season always fails to progress beyond the first game of the playoffs.
This was the story last season as well.
After ending up with a 10-6 record and qualifying for the playoffs for the third time under Smith’s four-year tenure, Atlanta were knocked out in the wildcard round by eventual Super Bowl winners, New York Giants.
The Falcons were more than just poor in offence against the Giants as the offensive roster failed to score a single point throughout the game with the team losing 24-2 to New York.
Only a two-point safety in the first quarter by the defence kept the Giants from making a perfect finish.
This year though the team is looking forward to move beyond the first game hurdle in the playoffs and Weidinger in an interview with the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that the offence will be more pass heavy in 2012.
He said:
"When we first came in, coach (Mike) Smith said we were going to run the ball. Now, we are going to throw it, too. We've got all sorts of weapons. We've got running backs. We've got tight ends. We've got receivers. We are going to be able to do a little
bit of everything out there."
Atlanta has the players to thrive on a passing game.
Quarterback, Matt Ryan has shown that he is a future top 10 player and with quality wide receivers such as Roddy White in the roster, the Falcons can become a strong passing unit.
The Falcons last season struggled to play at their potential in big games and this is a make or break year for Ryan since he has the talent to take the franchise to another level.
Hopefully Atlanta’s new offensive strategy will help them overcome their postseason jitters.
