Atlanta Hawks break Washington Wizards hearts with a 101-100 win in overtime: NBA Recap
The Washington Wizards could sense their first win of the season as they were up by two with only 7.3 seconds left on the clock, but Kyle Korver nailed one in from downtown with 1.9 seconds left on the clock as the Atlanta Hawks beat the Washington Wizards 101-100 in overtime.
It was not over yet as the Washington Wizards attempted to make use of their 1.9 seconds and scored a bucket only to have officials wave off the shot. Video replays verified that the balls left the hands of Martell Webster a split second after the time expired.
Josh Smith had a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds, Al Horford fell shy of one rebound from his triple-double as he posted 15 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds while Kyle Korver chipped in with 16 points for the Hawks.
Kevin Seraphin scored a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Trevor Ariza came off the bench to add 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Washington Wizards, who went 0-10 after this defeat.
Washington out-rebounded the Hawks 58-37 and Atlanta scored a low 57.1 percent from free throws, but the Wizards failed to capitalize on the situation and one of the prime reasons for their failure was that they had 20 turnovers compared to 13 by the Hawks.
The first period was pretty even and Hawks were up 21-11 at one stage before the Wizards came back and closed the quarter with a 7-0 run that reduced the Hawks lead to 26-24.
A.J. Price made a layup to tie the score on 26 at the start of the period. The score was tied many times in the quarter, as the tempo ramped up. Devin Harris knocked down a three pointer for the Hawks to tie the score on 45 late, to start a push which had Atlanta up by 50-47 at the end of the period.
Kevin Seraphin tipped one in early in the third quarter that left the Wizards trailing by 51-52. Hawks started pulling ahead and went for a 14-4 run that pushed their lead to 66-55. Washington came back late in the quarter with an 11-3 burst which left them trailing 66-68.
It was tight in the fourth quarter with both teams regularly exchanging leads. Singleton fired in a three pointer to put the Washington up 85-83 which was immediately countered by a Harris shot at the other end of the court. Washington were up 90-88 with 10 seconds to go in regulation before a foul by Nene gave away two free throws that the Hawks took full advantage to tie the score and take the game into overtime.
Washington were up 98-94 early in the first overtime after Trevor Ariza sank a three pointer. It seemed so they may grab their first win of the season but it was not to be, as Korver broke their hearts with a three pointer in the closing moments of the game to seal the deal for the Hawks.
