Atlanta Hawks trade Marvin Williams for Devin Harris: Join in on the hunt for Dwight Howard – NBA Update
As part of restructuring their roster for next season, Atlanta Hawks have agreed to trade away forward Marvin Williams over to Utah Jazz in exchange for point guard Devin Harris. Both parties involved in the trade are still awaiting the confirmation from league officials in order for it to go through.
Hawks drafted Williams back in 2005 ahead of many more talented players, including a certain Chris Paul, and since then he has been performing poorly for the Atlanta based team.
The performances of Williams have failed to impress new general manager Danny Ferry, who since joining the team has been involved in several key trades as part of his new strategy.
Williams still has two years left on his contract which would have see his income be close to $8.5 million and $7.5 million the year after. His departure will also clear a lot of cap space for the Hawks.
Another key change that Atlanta have made is the trade of Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets in return for five players who would be coming in on cheaper and nearly finished contracts. By letting go several players, Hawks can create a cap of about $105 million which will allow them to be big time contenders in the free agent market.
These are not the only changes Ferry is looking to make after taking over the reins at Atlanta. Hawks have also recently joined the list of contenders looking to bring in Dwight Howard over the summer. They do have a good chance at luring in Orlando Magic`s big man as they are looking to offer Al Horford along with Jeff Teague in exchange. If Howard does come, he would have a good front court partner in Josh Smith and he will also return to his native town.
Howard however says that he has only one team in mind and has not given any indication of returning to his hometown. The cards are however no longer in Howard’s hand and the Magic can send him to the Hawks if they see players of the quality of Teague and Horford in return.
The job then for Ferry will be to convince Howard to stay put.
