Atlanta Thrashers beat Detroit Red Wings
On Wednesday 24 November the Atlanta Thrashers went on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 5-1.The win means that in less than a week, Atlanta have defeated the top team in either conference
and have now won three games in a row.
How it happened
Chris Thorburn got the party started for the Thrashers early in the first with his fourth of the season. Newly appointed captain Andrew Ladd then put the Thrashers up by two with his eighth of the season
while the Thrashers were shorthanded.
Todd Bertuzzi pulled one back for the Red Wings before the end of the first, but from there on in it was all Atlanta.
Anthony Stewart got his sixth of the season with two seconds to go on a power play that had carried over from the first period which sunk the Red Wings. Bryan Little added another with his fourth of the
season before the end of the second which led to goaltender Jimmy Howard being replaced by Joey MacDonald to start the third.
Dustin Byfuglien scored his eighth of the season – tops amongst defencemen so far this season – with a power play goal in third to finish off the scoring.
What they're saying
After wins against two of the NHL's top teams, the Atlanta Thrashers are beginning to believe in themselves.
"I think it should tell everyone here that we can play with anybody, first and foremost," Ladd told reporters after the game. "We're doing a lot of little things we've been talking about. When it works,
it becomes contagious and everyone wants to do it. Everyone buys in and I thought that's what we had tonight."
Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay was in agreement and has never questioned his team's ability to compete.
"I mean, we've played some good games, as we've talked about so many times, against some good teams," he said. "Tonight we did it for virtually the whole game. We did it with everybody and we had to kill
some penalties and we fought through that."
The Thrashers now get set to take their three-game win streak up against another of the NHL's best teams at the moment when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Friday 26 November.
The Red Wings remain atop the Western Conference but the Phoenix Coyotes and Columbs Blue Jackets, who both currently have extended win streaks going, are beginning to catch up. The Red Wings will face
the latter in back-to-back games with the first set to be played on Friday night.
