Atlanta Thrashers beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 after shootout
Tim Stapelton scored in the shootout while Toby Enstrom netted two power-play goals, as the Atlanta Thrashers held on for a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night.
Both teams started the game cautiously and were reluctant on committing too many players into attack. However, as the period progressed and the teams settled into the game, things became a lot more open. The Thrashers were quick off the mark and looked more
likely to score. They did just that in the fourth minute when Tobias Enstrom’s powerful strike went flying into the back of the net. Both teams then continued to attack, and managed to carve out some great scoring opportunities.
It took the away team a while to find their rhythm, and once they did they were quite clinical with their finishing. Boston scored through Patrice Bergeron from a backhand shot in the 15th minute to level the scores. A few more chances fell to
both sides but they were unable to take advantage. The period ended with the scores level at 1-1 with both teams making 12 goal attempts each.
The second period saw the Boston Bruins continue from where they left off in the first period. They scored in the very first minute to take the lead through Blake Wheeler’s powerful strike. That lead didn’t last long however, as the hosts responded through
Tobias Enstrom to level the scores in the 10th minute. The period saw the Bruins make regular goal attempts but their finishing let them down at times. The period ended with the scores level on 2-2. During the course of the period Boston made 12
goal attempts, while Atlanta made eight goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play saw Boston dominate the hosts with some brilliant play in both attack and defence. During the course of the period the Boston Bruins made 18 goal attempts, while the Atlanta Thrashers made seven goal attempts; unfortunately no
goals were scored. Regulation time ended with the scores level on 2-2 and the game went into overtime as a result.
During overtime no goals were scored and the match went into a shootout. During the shootout, Tim Stapleton’s goal for the Atlanta Thrashers proved to be the difference as the Thrashers won 3-2.
