Atlanta Thrashers hold the Washington Capitals winning the match 1-0

One of the matches which turned out to be very entertaining and tough was the Atlanta Thrashers playing host to the Washington Capitals. The match was played at the Philips Arena with around 14,500 fans coming to witness the match. This was the 744th
game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series which was played this Wednesday.
The match was defensively dominated except the second period during which there were numerous goal attempts by both teams. Atlanta Thrashers managed to score the only goal of the match during this time. In the end, they emerged as 1-0 winners of the match
with goal keeper of Atlanta Thrashers Ondrej Pavelec named the star selection of the match for the 36 saves he made during the match.
Both teams made a cautious start to the match as they waited for scoring chances to come their way and open spaces to develop. Though there were some occasional chances but the lack of awareness caused some of these to go useless in the end. The frontline
was definitely in the best of forms for either team. The main reason for this being the fact that defence was absolutely brilliant.
There were several goal attempts made during the course of the season with both teams constructing brilliant pieces of play. Despite all the hard work of both teams, no goals were scored and the period ended with the scores deadlocked on 0-0. During the
course of first 20 minutes of play, Atlanta Thrashers could manage no more than 4 goal attempts while Washington Capitals made 8 goal attempts.
The second period started off with both teams attacking right from the word go. Defence was given little importance and it looked as if goals were what they both wanted at any cost. Counter attacks were seen every now and then but failure to find the back
of the net saw the scores still level.
Fortunately enough for the Atlanta Thrashers, they found a lot of space on a counter attack in the 12th minute and managed to break the deadlock to score through Nik Antropov through a brilliant shot to get into the lead.  The period was without
any doubts dominated by the offence of both teams. Shots flew from everywhere on the pitch which kept both goal keepers busy.
The period nearing its end didn’t lose the energy as shots and superb pieces of play continued till the very end of the period. The period ended with Atlanta Thrashers leading 1-0 going into the break. Atlanta Thrashers made 14 goal attempts in the period
while Washington Capitals made 18 goal attempts.
The final period was evenly matched with both teams making shots on goal regularly. Washington Capitals came close to scoring in the 6th minute but the shot was very well stopped by the Thrashers goal keeper, Ondrej Pavelec.
Both teams came up with quite a few goal attempts as the match neared its end but no more goals were scored as the period and match ended with Atlanta Thrashers winning the match 1-0 in the end. Atlanta Thrashers made 6 goal attempts in the period while
Washington Capitals made 10 goal attempts in the final period.
