Atlantic Hurricane in conversation for the Sovereign Award after her blistering performance in the Bessarabian Stakes at Woodbine
Stuart Simon trained 4-year-old filly Atlantic Hurricane, was persistent enough to get herself into a winning position and then bolt to the wire in the Canadian Grade 3, $162,312 Bessarabian Stakes at Woodbine 20 November, 2011.
The 4-year-old Halo’s Image filly was coming off a win in the Ontario Fashion Stakes over at six furlongs on 30 October, 2011, at Woodbine’s synthetic surface leaving behind runner up Waccamaw and third place finisher Ariana D with the winning time of 1
minute and 9.23 seconds.
After the Bessarabian Stakes, Atlantic Hurricane likely wrapped up the Sovereign Award as the Canada’s leading female sprinter.
In the Bessarabian Stakes, against 9 other 3-year-old and above fillies and mares, second choice Atlantic Hurricane broke well out of the gate and promptly settled third on the outside of the rail horse.
Moonlit Beauty, who was sent off as the 54 for 1 shot zipped in front of the lot with the swift fractions of 22.58 seconds for the opening quarter mile and the for the half mile she was 45.18 seconds over Zermatt.
All along the way Atlantic Hurricane had Mullins Beach and Embur’s Song on her tale, stalking and waiting for the right time to shift gears to over haul the front runners.
Atlantic Hurricane was aware of the threat as she surged to the front before anyone else made a move against a solid group of fillies, and as she came off the turn she seized the lead. The filly took command of the proceedings under a strong hand ride from
jockey Emile Ramsammy.
Over her favoured Woodbine poly track, Atlantic Hurricane covered the seven furlong distance in quick time of 1 minute and 21.77 seconds.
Stuart Simon was hoping her filly will turn in something special and he wasn’t disappointed, especially when she was coming off a fantastic win in the Ontario Fashion Stakes, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 93, a career best for Atlantic Hurricane.
"I had a lot of faith in her today, she's probably better than she's been all year," said Simon. "You're still leery, because you have to run the race and things can happen, but I'm so confident in her right now."
