I want to cross the Atlantic on a cargo ship, i have heard some ships carry a few passengers

  1. You can try going on a freighter but it will not be as cheap as you think, about $100 a day. And, it will take a heck of a long time since the ship will likely make some port stops before you get to Europe, or along the way.  Read the web information carefully and note that the ships that carry fewer than about 25 passengers aren't required to and may not have medical facilities on board.   Anyway, here are some links to look at:

  2. Long boring expensive endlessly mind numbing, rolling seas, Dramamine, no stabilizers,  Got off the ship and ran, never again.  For about  $1000 Norwegian have a cruise from Miami to Barcelona.  you can sit in the library or stay in your cabin if you want solitude

  3. Tinkertoys answer has all the information you need, but as he says, cargo ships do not follow set itineraries and get diverted to pick up cargo at different ports at a moments notice.

    People who take these trips have a lot of time on their hands and no set route, just an end destination. Also there are none of the diversions that you find on a cruise ship, they are working boats and although you are comfortable, you are left mainly to your own devices
