Atlantis was most likely the mythical amalgamation of many ancient pre-Helenistic Greek societies that were lost to war or calamity.  In many cases, a city would be built on a volcanic island, which would eventually erupt.  In some cases, this resulted in the land beneath the city sinking, and you can go there today and find sunken ancient buildings.

No one knows for sure whether Atlantis is real or just a city made up for a story. Atlantis has been found all over the world but no one knows for sure where Atlantis really is.
