Atletico Madrid 4-0 vs. Sporting Gijon – Full time Report
The second half kicked off with Atletico Madrid leading the match 2-0; the first goal coming from their number 9 Jurado and the second crafted well by the Argentinean player Kun Aguero.
During the 46th minute, Carmelo was able to take a shot from wide outside, but the young goalkeeper De Gea easily took it out. The first few minutes were dominated by Sporting Gijon as they wanted to find a goal from outside the box as they couldn't really cross Atletico Madrid's defensive walls.
In the 48th minute, De Gea easily kept the ball out as Diego Castro found Carmelo who was one-on-one with De Gea but the youngster was able to stop it. In the 50th minute, Raul Garcia got a yellow card, even though he got the ball and made a wonderful challenge. Garcia was left on the ground as he hobbled off the pitch for medical treatment. The fans at Madrid applauded the player because of his amazing performance throughout the match.
During the 52nd minute, Aguero was taken down by Gijon's number 2 Botia, while the Gijon defender managed to avoid a yellow card. Forlan took the free kick but it bounced off the wall and Sporting tried to clear the ball. In the 54th minute, they actually managed to find a gap between the defensive wall of Atletico Madrid, but it was well cleared and a corner was given which was wasted by Sporting Gijon. Albert Lora fouled Aguero and was awarded with a yellow card in the 55th minute, as Aguero was trying to use his quick feet to outrun the midfielder. De Gea, the Madrid side's goalkeeper, kept making his presence felt by keeping the ball to himself as Atletico Madrid were passing the ball around.
The two players that were now being a constant threat to the opposition's defence were the Atletico Madrid stars Kun Aguero and Jurado; both of them kept on passing the ball around and kept on making moves towards the goal. In the 57th minute, Reyes was brought down and the free kick was taken quickly. Aguero got the ball at the left flank and he made a perfect shot on goal but it was well saved by Pablo.
At the hour mark, Godin brought down Carmelo at the right flank and Gijon were awarded with a free kick right near the corner flank. It was a good ball played inside but Atletico Madrid's defences were not very easy to overcome. During the hour mark, Novo was seen warming up and the newly signed number 10 was expected to do wonders as he was warming up to join his new team, Gijon. Raul Garcia was taken off from the field as he was expected to have taken a knock and Mario was the player who replaced him.
Soon, in the 62nd minute, the tries from Atletico Madrid all came out with flying colours as Aguero made a run inside and gave a pass to Reyes, who crossed it to Diego Forlan who chipped it inside the goal and scored. The home crowd was enjoying while the 2010 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball winner was having a blast in Madrid. On the other hand, Sporting kept on trying to score a goal but the home side's defence was just too strong for them and the frustrated Gijon side kept on getting yellow cards with Gregory earning a yellow as well. Soon, Botia was yellow carded as well, as he gave away the ball to Diego Forlan and fouled him until he went to the ground. Another "dangerous" set-piece was to be taken by the Madrid side. Forlan was the player who was about to take it but Mario finally took a deflected free kick but was not able to find the net.
In the 67th minute, Forlan's hat-trick "dreams" were shattered as he was taken off from the field as he was substituted. Gijon were 3 goals behind and they wanted a goal but Atletico Madrid's walls were just too hard to cross.
The "amazing" Jurado was taken off in the 78th minute, and the Portuguese star Simao took his place. Jurado was definitely playing one of the best games of his career and showed great form throughout the match. Aguero and Jurado both were at least a part of all the goals that their team scored. Jurado was the player who scored a fabulous goal after a splendid strike during the 11th minute of the first half.
There was last minute action in the second half as well and it was from the "best player on the pitch," Kun Aguero. He found the ball at his feet as Diego Costa gave him a lovely through ball, but Aguero couldn't really shoot the ball and simply "gave" it to Pablo. Later, in the last minute, Aguero almost dodged the charging Pablo but he couldn't really score. However, it was the Portuguese player Simao who provided the "icing on the cake," as he scored the 4th goal in the last minute after he shot the ball fabulously into the net, right outside the 18-yard box.
