Atletico Madrid Goalkeeper David De Gea takes Manchester United interest with a pinch of salt
Atletico Madrid teenage goalkeeper David de Gea has dismissed any rumours linking him to a potential move to Barclays Premier League giants Manchester United. According to reports, De Gea has stated that he already plays for a great club and wants to extend
his stay with the Madrid based outfit. De Gea has shown impressive command of his area for a goalkeeper of his age, earning comparisons with Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas. Many pundits have even declared the youngster the heir to the Madridista’s throne
with La Furia Roja.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was spotted at Mestalla last week. His presence in the stands added further fuel to the transfer speculations but the young prodigy is adamant the Scotsman was there to scout to his next opposition in the UEFA Champions
League. Manchester United faces Valencia at Mestalla for the second round of the group stage.
Los Colchoneros shot stopper has become an overnight sensation in the Spanish La Liga following a string of fantastic performances last season. Atletico Madrid had another highly talented goalkeeper in Sergio Asenjo keeping the gloves. However, Asenjo was
sidelined with a lengthy injury and De Gea has taken his chance with aplomb. Asenjo has been demoted to number 2 in the wake of youngsters amazing performances. De Gea has hit the ground running this season with Atletico this season. The young sensation has
been a one man army at times; his performances against FC Barcelona and Valencia were particularly impressive.
De Gea to his credit, is unfazed by all the speculation linking him with a move away from his current club, “I have a contract with the club until 2013 and that is important. What matters is that I have my family and friends around me and everything is going
well. I have a contract with the club and when the year ends, if all goes well, we’ll talk.”
Atletico Madrid’s financial woes are no secret. The club was able to retain the likes of Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero only because Los Colchoneros won a hefty prize money as a result of the UEFA Europa League last season. Should a big club comes knocking
on the doors with a substantial cheque in its hands; the club might be forced to let go of their prized possession.
