Atletico Madrid appoint Gregorio Manzano as new coach – La Liga News
Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid have found the successor to Quique Sanchez Flore with appointment of Gregorio Manzano as the new head coach at Estadio Vicente Calderon. Manzano has penned down a one-year deal with the capital club.
The 55-year-old is no stranger to Estadio http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vicente-c36001 Calderon as his first stint with the outfit was in the 2003/04 season, when his valiant efforts helped Los Colchoneros finish seventh on the La Liga table.
The Club’s official website, while confirming the appointment of Manzano, stated, “Club Atletico de Madrid have reached an agreement with Gregorio Manzano to become the new coach of Atletico for the 2011/12 season. He will be formally presented in the coming
days.”
The Spanish club decided to give Manzano another spell following the sacking of Quique Sanchez last month. Atletico Madrid finished seventh in the recently concluded 2010/11 Spanish Primera Liga season, leaving the club with no option but to bring back the
experienced one, Manzano.
Having immense experience of managing 16 clubs in his 30 years of coaching career, Manzano just completed a successful term with fellow La Liga club, Sevilla. Manzano’s contract with Sevilla ended last month when the Club decided against renewing his contract
despite managing impressive results under his stewardship. The Andalusian club have booked a UEFA Europa League spot after finishing fifth in the 2010/11 Spanish Primera Liga season.
Manzano, who said good bye to Sevilla last month, said, “The team finished fifth, in the cup competitions we were knocked out by the eventual winners (Porto in the Europa League and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid in the Copa del Rey), these are the facts, if these facts haven`t
been sufficient to renew the contract the only thing to do is to show respect.”
Commonly known as the ‘Professor’ in the footballing circles because of his unorthodox coaching style, Manzano would now be expected to challenge for a top four spot in the upcoming season.
