Atletico Madrid coach disappointed to lose first-half goal
Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores says that he is upset to have conceded a goal in the first half of his side’s La Liga match against Almeria.
Sanchez Flores’ men took the lead after 33 minutes when Argentina international Sergio 'Kun' Aguero tapped the ball into the net to score his fourth goal in three matches. However, the home side was pegged back when Pablo Piatti volleyed in a goal off the post
at the stroke of half-time.
Try as they might, Atletico could not make the most of any of their other chances and were held to a draw.
Atletico’s hopes of moving into the top five in the league were scuppered, as they picked up one point rather than three.
Sanchez Flores told Europa Press that his side had to strengthen at the back if they were to have any hopes of making a push for silverware this season.
"A goal on the stroke of half-time left us out in the cold. We failed to take our opportunities, and made a mess of the result. We should have resolved the match in our favour, because we had many chances. We needed to play well for 90 minutes,
and not 45."
After such a disappointing result, Sanchez Flores will be looking for a reaction when the side continues the defence of their UEFA Europa League trophy against Rosenborg on 4 November. That match will be followed by a derby clash with city rivals Real Madrid
at the Bernabeu on 7 November.
But if Sanchez Flores is to pick up positive results in those games, he will have to do so without injured defender Luis Perea.
"In every game, we have missed an important player, but Atletico have good players to play at the Bernabeu next week."
