The agent of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea has confirmed that representatives from Manchester United have undergone talks to sign the Spaniard in the summer of 2011.
The player’s agent Hector Rincon told the media, “Well, we did have talks with Manchester United but, first of all, they always look for an agreement with the club. Anyway, most of the biggest European teams have shown interest in David de Gea.”
Manchester United are in the market for a goalkeeper to replace Edwin van der Sar who has said that he will retire come the end of the ongoing 2010-11 season.
United have been linked with a host of names to replace van der Sar which include http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Anders-Lindegaard-c5553 from Danish side Aalesund but
manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he still needs time to become a first team starter.
A report in the Spanish media revealed that United have agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid to sign de Gea but according to latest reports, United’s 17-million-pound bid was rejected by the club.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and has attracted interest from top European clubs. The Red Devils have been monitoring de Gea’s progress throughout the season and have sent their goalkeeping
coach, Eric Steele twice to monitor his progress.
When asked about whether the club is willing to sell their prized asset, Rincon said, “You would have to ask the club. What I can tell you is that his release clause now is 20 million euros, but I have no idea if the club would sell him for less. Right now,
the player has a contract with Atletico Madrid and if Manchester United or any other team want him they will have to reach an agreement or pay the whole release clause.”
