Cerezo insists Diego Forlan must win Ballon d'Or
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo believes that Diego Forlan should win the Ballon d’Or.
Forlan, who plies his trade with Atletico, has been in scintillating form this year, leading Cerezo to tip his club’s star man for the much coveted prize, after he was listed amongst the
23 nominees.
“I think that the Ballon d’Or, for obvious reasons, should go to Forlan. He has done fantastically well, and he has no problem here with the coach or anyone else. He is a player, which
in the last three years, has won two Golden Boots, as well as the Golden Ball for best player in the tournament [at the World Cup]. What other player in the world can boast that kind of track record? I think none.”
Despite the biased nature in which Cerezo has tipped his own player for the prize, Forlan would certainly merit such an award. Having scored both goals in the club’s Europa League final
win in May, which he followed by claiming the Golden Ball award for his outstanding performances at the World Cup, he is fully deserving of his place amongst the world’s best footballers right now.
As is often the case in World Cup years, the winner is often a player who had a large impact on the showpiece tournament in the summer, so Forlan’s impressive displays, in which he almost
single-handedly carried Uruguay to the semi-finals, will stand him in good stead to claim the Ballon d’Or.
It’s all a far cry from the man who struggled so infamously at Old Trafford, but his career has gone on to great things since leaving the Premier League. Indeed, there are few marksmen
in Europe who command the same respect as the Uruguayan and few who would disagree if he were to claim the historic Ballon d’Or award.
