Last night’s European Super Cup match between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid ended in an astonishing 4- 1 victory for the Spanish outfit.
As Fernando Torres awaited the hours to take on his former team, everyone was anxious for the European Super Cup match to begin.
The UEFA Europa Cup winners were the dominant team throughout the match, with Radamel Falcao completing his hat-trick before the interval.
Chelsea looked as though they had lost hope from the second the whistle blew and played catch-up for the entire match.
From the moment Falcao opened up the scoring in the sixth minute, the Champions League winners were not able to keep up. Their defensive line was unable to successfully mark the Columbian international, who found it easier than ever to chip the ball over
the giant, Peter Cech.
However, one must take into account that Chelsea’s captain John Terry was not able to play due to a suspension, who is a stalwart of their extremely strong defensive line-up. Nevertheless, not all the blame can be put on the defenders though.
On the other hand, it seemed like Thibaut Courtois had the best seats in the stadium. Hardly tested, one may have thought the goalkeeper to have gone on early leave after the opening ceremony.
Warren Burton, while acting as a commentator for the match, said, “I think (when) Chelsea go forward, it’s more with hope,” he then continued by saying, “Atletico Madrid, when they go forward, it’s with purpose”.
Blues cannot be blamed for the dismal reading of the result card. It was not just their under par performance that resulted in the loss.
Radamel Falcao is not a player to mess with, and he seems to be only a few goals away from being ranked amongst the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
With two hat-tricks in 5 days, the Columbian striker blew away Chelsea’s defence in a manner as if it was a staged performance.
The Columbian has scored 42 goals in 53 appearances for Atletico, and looks to be on the move for more than just a few more.
The extent of Chelsea’s defeat was extremely surprising to say the least. They’ve won all three of their Premier League games for this season so far, and to see them lose 4-1 in the European Super Cup was certainly unexpected.
Gary Cahill’s header in the last fifteen minutes of the game allowed the Stamford Bridge-based outfit to return home with some dignity.
