Atom Trefl improves to 3-1 in the prelims of 2012 CEV Champions League
The preliminary round of 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League is underway with 20 club teams from all over the European Continent.
Poland’s Atom Trefl Sopot is one of the top teams in Pool C, which is joined by Russia, Czech Republic, and Switzerland. Quite recently, Poland improved to an overall record of 3-1 in the tournament after posting a straight-set win over Czech competitors
3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-17).
VK Modranska Prostejov of Czech Republic came into contest with the Polish team in fourth leg match on Wednesday, December 21. The match was hosted by Czech City Prostejov but the home team failed to benefit the advantage of familiar conditions. Prostejov
dropped the decision in Poland’s favour and constantly remained in the blues. Czech team has appeared in four matches so far but they have been totally out of luck in all the fixtures.
The home coach, Miroslav Cada, expressed his view after the match. He said, “Our chances vanished after the first two sets. After losing the second set we simply gave up and the third set was fully controlled by our rivals. Anyway I think we did better than
last week in Sopot but it is terrible that we did not use our chances in the second set because the game would have developed in a totally different way. However, I have to admit that the guests were stronger than us especially in some key moments.”
Atom Trefl was supported by top-gun, Margareta Anna Kozuch, who contributed 14 points in the match. Neriman Ozsoy followed up with 12, while Sanja Popovic of VK Modranska emerged as the top scorer on her side with 12 points. Hodge and Ssuschke-Voigt of Trefl
also went into double-digit scores as they added 11 points apiece.
Hosts started out well and led the score in the first set before Atom Trefl went up at 9-8. Poles continued with hard hitting and further took the score to 12-9, which forced VK Modranska to call for a timeout.
As the play resumed after break, the Czech ladies came from different angles but all their effort went futile. Poland refused to lose the spot. The duo of Kozuch and Ozosy added points on easy pokes and helped their team to stay ahead of VK Modranska. Trefl
‘force’ remained on the same course and sealed first-set win at 25-21.
With one set in hand, the Trefl team opened the second frame with heavy thumps. Czech Chlumska Marketa received some of the difficult shots and saved crucial points for VK Modranska.
Meanwhile, the attackers incorporated a verity of hits. They came really close to Trefl but trailed behind until the final phase. VK Modranska went up 20-19 and quickly rallied to 25-24. The home audience was thrilled with the great comeback of team but
their hopes died as Trefl claimed second set in row, 27-25.
Czech ladies looked visibly exhausted and disgruntled in the third set. Despite putting all their efforts, they dropped second set with narrow gap of 2 points. They were dragged under pressure, which helped Atom Trefl to take full control of the game in
third set. Trefl posted 25-17 on board and clinched success in the fourth match of prelims.
