I am 20 years old 6'1 185pounds. I ski only on East coast and I am looking for good carving ski with short radius. I have narrowed down my options to sl9 and sx10 (they are on sale at my local ski shop) but the salesman at the store tells me that I should consider the metron series too.

I would like to hear your opinion on the ski and also what length should I get?I have been looking at 160 for the sl and metron and 170 for the sx10

I will appreciate all comments.

  1. All three are good skiis, see if you rent each one for a trial, or better yet find when a demo day is in your area.  Each ski will perform well, and it will come down to your personal preference.  How the ski is tuned  (Edges sharpened, and waxed) will change how it performs.  Also with the new equipment, some have an integrated binding system that is part of the choice.

Atomic Bindings had an endurance issue a few years ago, Rossignol/ Look are less tolerant of snow on the boot than some others.  Another thing to consider is the  "ramp" of the heel relative to the toe of the binding.  This can change how you balance on the ski and how you make it turn. Atomic has the least ramp of the bindings on the market, others vary from 1-2mm to about 6mm.

Take your boot to the shop and get checked by a good boot fitter so the whole package matches what you need.

  2. Both the SX-10 and Metron are more versatile skis than the SL9.  The SL9 is a softer version of Atomics SL11 race ski and is really more specialized for racing and short radius turns. A 160 is too short for you (I am 5'11 and 170 lbs and I ski on a 164 SL-11 for racing).

The SX-10 is probably a bit stiffer and at your height and weight you should be on at least a 171 for that ski.  I would look at the Metron 10 if you want an all mountain ski.  The metron is more versatile as you can use it in deep snow or bumps.  It will carve nearly as well as the other two skis.

  3. My son skis on the Atomic SL9. He is a high school racer. I know several adults that also have this ski and I know it is highly regarded. They are fantatisic for short radial turns and are good on hardpack and ice. Personally I think the 160 might be a little small for you I would run with the 170s. I ski on the SX11, which are a bit stiff but hold an edge on any condition. I have seen the SX10 around and know they also have a good reputation. I beleive they are an all mountain ski. I am not familiar with the metron, but I don;t think you can go wrong with the SL9 or the SX10 - I think they are both excellant choices for an advanced skier.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  4. Just want to add my voice to the contributor who thought the 160 was a bit short for you. Considering your height 160 doesn't seem right.
