The 24-year-old defender, who is the first Japanese player to feature in a Champions League semi-final, extended his contract until 2015 with the Bundesliga club.

Unnerstall made 21 appearances last season and was previously a former reserve team player. He has appeared for the German Under-20 team as well and is touted to become a world class goalie for the national team.
