Attempted Break-ins. Should I go to cops?

Every time I leave the house of an evening (on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Friday-Sunday, a couple of people try to enter enter a home I live in part-time. My 14 year old son was at that home alone, watching the pets and enjoying time away from his siblings. He reports that he would hear doorknobs rattle and people talking. Once, he says they came inside. When he asked from another room who was there, they left.

The last time, my 11 year old daughter saw the man through the sliding glass door while I was away for a few hours (her 16 year old brother was watching them). He smiled at her (she said it was a "regular" smile, not scary or menacing). When she called for her brother, he left.

Before we moved in, a woman lived there with her 2 young children. She didn't want to supply my husband with a renters agreement and moved out. (We own the home)

People can enter the home at any time because a glass pane in the basement door is broken.

I left a message with the father of the woman who lived there previously to ask him if he knows what's going on: maybe his daughter forgot something and her husband is trying to get it back when he thinks no one is home so he doesn't bother us? I told him it's freaking my kids out. We don't have a phone hooked up yet (it's being installed on the 10th).

The home is in the middle of nowhere. You can't see the home from the road so I think someone watches the road to see when I leave. ???

It's freaking all of us out but no harm has been done. Nothing's been taken (indeed- the only thing of material value in the home is my computer).

All that said, should I make a report with the police? I've never been around when these attempts have been made but even I have heard strange noises at the night- doorknobs rattling etc.

  1. yes make a report

  2. I find it hard to believe you would even ask this question. Call the police.

  3. i would definitely call the police. maybe they can stake out your home from a distance and see what is going on. also you can have the police to check for finger prints on the outside of your home.....the door k**b, door or glass on windows.

  4. YA that's serious. You need to report it. Someone could get hurt. It's freaky. You should set up hidden cameras to catch the people.

  5. Yes, make a report.  It is bad enough to bother you.  There may have been drug dealing there before and these people are looking for the other woman.

  6. Yes, definitely report it. Even if they are not looking to harm you or your children, they have no business being there and it is definitely suspicious.
